So you’ve seen all those amazing pictures of far away destinations and exotic locations on Facebook, Pinterest or some other media source and now you are ready to take the first step to get out there and experience it for yourself.
But where do you start and more importantly how can you afford to do it?
Traveling can be one of the most rewarding adventures you will ever take but it can also be quite a daunting prospect at first. The best advice I can give you is don’t overanalyze things and to be prepared to continuously push your boundaries.
“Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.” ― Neale Donald Walsch
Many people stress over planning for a trip and this can not only delay your departure but more importantly get you in the wrong mental state before you have even left home. Don’t get me wrong, planning is an essential part of the process – you need to make sure you have saved enough to get started (or have a clear path to a job that enables you to travel).
That’s why I decided to put together the following list of incredible travel resources to give you the absolute best information possible to get you started. Derek (Wandering Earl) and Matt are seasoned veterans who have been comfortably living a life of travel for many years now. They both have hugely successful travel blogs that have taken literally thousands of hours to curate from their own personal experiences, trials and tribulations.
This page is here to help make your travel goal a reality! Below you’ll find a handful of guides written by Derek and Matt that have been specifically designed to teach you the ins and outs and prepare you thoroughly for a life of long-term travel. I have also included a bonus guide from Tony Page to help you out with your travel photography.
On December 25th, 1999, Derek left the USA for a three-month, post-graduation trip to Southeast Asia. Now over twelve years later and that trip has yet to finish.
To date his adventure has included more than 70 countries on 6 continents, working as a Tour Manager on board cruise ships, two years in India, experiments with meditation, muse-creation, mountain-climbing and movie acting, volunteer work, an inappropriate amount of time on tropical islands and eating inappropriate amounts of street food, a two-day kidnapping, being placed on the US ‘terror watch list’ and teaching English in Asia among many other things.
Derek is the founder of Wandering Earl and now offers small group tours to destinations such as Yemen and India (to name just two).
Nothing is stopping you from turning your love of travel into an actual lifestyle. If you’re not sure how to make it happen, every single thing you need to know can be found inside of this 200+ page guide. Get ready to discover how you can earn money all over the world, how to travel well without spending much at all and how to achieve the freedom you deserve.
Learn exactly how to land a job in an industry that pays you excellent money to travel the world. This guide provides detailed instructions on how to apply to every major cruise line. Without such guidance, it’s almost impossible to get hired. As a former cruise ship Tour Manager myself, I can tell you that the benefits of ‘ship life’ are simply life-changing.
If you want to break free from the traditional routine of 40 hour workweeks and only a few weeks of vacation per year, get ready to achieve such freedom!
With the Refuse the Rat Race Guide you’ll discover unique opportunities that allow you to travel extensively and earn good money all over the planet. These are the very same opportunities I’ve taken advantage of myself and which helped me turn a 3-month backpacking trip into 11 years (and counting!) of continuous travel.
Growing up in Boston, Matt was never a big traveler. He didn’t take my first trip overseas until he was 23. That trip changed his life and he vowed to travel as often as he could.
After finishing his MBA he set out on an adventure around the world in July 2006. That trip was supposed to last a year but he didn’t come home until 18 months later and, once back, knew he couldn’t go back to his old life or a typical job.
He created his website Nomadic Matt and three months later, was on the road again and he hasn’t stopped since.
Matt was selected as one of the pioneering “Wanderers in Residence” at G Adventures along with fellow travel blogging big names Gary Arndt and Jodi Ettenberg. He has worked with some of the biggest media companies in the world such as: The New York Times, Time, National Geographic and Lonely Planet.
Do you want to create your own website but think you lack the knowledge to do so? Think starting a website is hard? When you don’t have any experience building a website, starting a blog can seem like daunting task. But I have news for you – creating your very own blog is easier than you think. You can do it in just a couple of hours!
Do you want a more successful blog? Do you want to work less and have more time for what you want? Want to run a website that brings in money while you lay on the beach or play golf? Wouldn’t it be great if your office was anywhere you wanted? I used to think that it wasn’t possible to make money online with a blog. Like so many people, I thought that the only way to make money online was to either be unscrupulous or get really lucky and invent something like Facebook. But I was wrong – you can create something awesome that helps people and earn a living doing so. It’s easier than you think. If I can do it, you can too and I want to show you how.
Looking to get a teaching job overseas but not sure where to start? Worried it might be hard? It’s easier than you think…even if you’ve never taught a day in your life. While getting a teaching job might seem like a time consuming and stressful task, it’s actually very easy once you know just a few tips and tricks (tips and tricks I learned through teaching throughout Asia). This book will help you eliminate your stress, fear, and anxiety about finding a job. It will save you weeks of online research and give you the most accurate and updated information you need to land your dream job.
Tony Page has been a professional photographer and writer for more years than he likes to remember. After 17 years in Hong Kong, during which time he also part-owned a bar in Lan Kwai Fong, to the astonishment of his friends he got married and moved to Sydney in Australia. Since then he’s been snapping and scribbling away.
“Guerrilla Travel Photography ” is his second photography book, he has previously written and photographed “Take Better Digital Photos”, which laid out a range of compositional techniques to rapidly improve the quality of your photographs; a new edition of this book will be published soon, although the first is still available.
The light’s wrong, the subject’s difficult, we don’t have any time and we’re not using the latest and greatest gear. That’s Guerrilla Travel Photography, the type most of us do.
